paddle (water transport: accessories); ceremonial paddle

The ownership of this object was transferred to Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) in November 2022.

A carved wooden paddle made from one piece of wood. Benin City. The paddle is leaf-shaped with a sharply pointed tip and is decorated with carved-out designs of animals and incised geometric designs. The handle is long with carved-out and incised geometric designs at the top and in the centre.

An old object label with the old accession number (920) is stuck to the object.
