figure (ritual & belief: representations); votive offering

Terracotta votive animal figurine from Cyprus, made of heavy aerated clay covered with creamy white slip. It is hand moulded, and simple in form, with a lemon-shaped body to which eye bumps, ears, and feet have been added. There is decoration on the body in brown paint, comprising dots on the neck and stripes on the body, as if representing a blanket. The eyes are encircled in brown paint, as are the ears. There is a hole in the centre of the back.
