panel (ritual & belief: representations)

Modelled lacquered wooden panel, possibly from a sadaik (manuscript chest) or decorative frieze from a wall panel, depicting two stylised mountain ranges - with a Chinese and Thai influence in the style which suggests that it dates from after 1767 - each containing a reclining figure, possibly the Buddha's parinirvana, resting on a couch floating on water, with a bird over the top of the highest point of each mountain range. These are surrounded by six bilu ogre figures and floral and geometric detail in semi-relief. There is a Thai influence in the stances of the bilu figures. The whole is covered with gilding, has red borders, and is decorated with shaped clear and green mirror fragments.
