bag (containers)

A small rectangular Maori hand bag constructed from several thin bunches of processed New Zealand flax fibres which are interwoven in an oblique open work pattern in the central panel of the bag. The fibres are turned back on themselves at the bags mouth and trimmed off to make a fringe. Additional bunches of fibre have been appliquéd onto the other three edges. It is likely that this is a piece of tourist art although it preserves many of the traditional techniques of the Maori fibre arts.
