Taxidermy case of five adult male and four adult female Purple Sandpiper. According to Edward Hart, writing on 30 April 1927, 'Left (no 1): adult female, October 1886, winter plumage; (no. 2): adult male,1857, winter plumage; (no 3): adult male, October 1897, winter plumage; (no 4): adult male, October 1886, winter plumage; (no 5): adult female, October 1882, winter plumage; (no 6): adult female, November 1882, winter plumage; (no 7): adult female, 1857, winter plumage; (no 8): adult male, 1857, winter plumage; (no 9): adult male, October 1860, winter plumage. In 1857 I shot three of these birds and afterwards mounted them, little thinking at the time that this attempt at taxidermy was to be the beginning of making my collection, which it has been my fortune to accumulate principally from this part of Hants. Sexes alike. Summer and winter plumage differ. Mounted by me'.
