According ot Edward Hart, writing on 4 May 1927, 'Far left (no 1): adult male, May 1894, courting dress; (no.2): adult female, June 1901, summer plumage; (no 3): adult male, 1894, courting dress; (no 4): adult male, 1901, courting dress; (no 5): adult male, 1894, courting dress. Shot by me on the Avon and Sopley Meadows, Christchurch. Sexes differ in summer plumage, alike in winter plumage. Summer and winter plumage differ'.
