Dundun, 'talking' drum. A variable tension double membrane, portative, hourglass-shaped drum. The wooden body has a narrow waist and flares towards the ends. The membranes are faced with an outer ring of thin skin, and are threaded with white string that is secured to a ring of twisted hide and to parallel lines of hide lacing connecting the two heads. A length of hide is wrapped around the lacing at the centre. A piece of leather with a string of open bells is attached to the lower side of each rim. Beneath each of these is a section of fabric with an embossed green floral design. The drum has a wide leather carrying strap attached between the two ends. The outer surface of the strap is decorated with leather in three different tan shades. The drum is played with a single wooden stick, which is hooked and has a circular head of oval section. The handle of the stick is covered in fabric.
