wayang wong, wayang topeng

White 'Skull' mask from Classical Theatre.

Used by dancers to act as a supporting character in traditional Javanese mask dance dramas. Dancers hold the mask by biting on a leather strap inside the mask. These performances are still done in the modern day and are often performed at special gatherings such as weddings. Wayang Wong mask dramas often tell well-known old stories, many of which come from Hinduism but have been altered to refect the fact that Indonisia is a predominantly Islamic country. Wayang wong groups typically consist of a male narrator, a female singer, and dancers and actors of any gender. Children are trained in traditional Javanese dance from an early age.
