beer strainer (strainer (narcotics & intoxicants: drinking))

Woven grass beer strainer, natural with brown woven stripe.

Fermented beer is poured into the opening and the clear liquid beer immediately begins to seep through the woven grass. Pulling on the tied end and squeezing the woven grass strainer pushes the liquid through and leaves the lumps and sediment behind inside the strainer. In Southern Africa making beer is a job for women and straining is the final part of the beer making process. Beer is stored either in a clay pot or a hollowed out gourd (a hard skinned pumpkin) which is passed around for both men and women to share.
