seal (writing & printing)

Gold-plated brass seal in the shape of a short horn, at the distal end of which is a brass catch on a pin which is free to revolve around it. The seal surface is circular, metal, engraved in Persian with a floral border. This seal was used by James Peter Auriol of the Bengal civil service, who was secretary to the government of Warren Hastings in India, and is dated 1776/7.The inscription reads: 'Dabir al-dawlah badr sanat 18 Jang Bahadur James Peter Auriol fidwi badshah ghazi Shah 'Alam 1190' which translates as 'Secretary of the state, regnal year 18, Jang Bahadur James Peter Auriol, loyal servant of the victorious Padshah, Shah 'Alam, 1190 (AD 1776/7) Shah Alam's dates were 1759-1806.
