Enamel and metal shrine depicting the Madonna and child set under an arch, which is supported on a pillar at each side. There are two inscriptions, one above and one below the scene: the inscription above reads 'LE GOST', and the inscription below reads 'SANCTA DEI MATER'.
The shrine is a bright gold colour, and it is decorated with patterns in blue, red, green, white and turquoise enamel. There are five small panels around the edges which consist of oval-shaped stones set into fine filigree work. Above the arch is a section of decorative metalwork, in a repeating leaf pattern.
At the top of the shrine is a cross, decorated with enamel. The shrine has two metal feet on the bottom.
The back is made of wood and has three labels stuck to it: one showing the price; one showing the original Horniman number and laboratory number; and one reading: 'Metal Shrine / No. 4 / Le Gost 1854 / Presented by the Executors of the late Mrs. Purnell / French'.
