helmet (headwear (armour: body armour)); helmet; hachi

A well made example in classical style. Body of the helmet is made up of 32 thin plates with a flange on the outer edge. Each plate is riveted to the next in six places and there is a hole in the middle at the top where they all come together. An added flange all round the bottom of the helmet has pairs of small holes at 1 1/2" intervals along the outer edge. A neck guard would have been attached, but is missing. A peak (mabesashi) is fitted to the front by hammered down rivets; it has an added socket attached possibly for a plume. The whole is made of russet iron, but appears to have been varnished on the outside.
