picture (art)

Scroll from a set, painted with a study of a bank with flowers in black and white, with a poem inscribed down the left side. The scroll has a patterned brown border. A string is attached at the top, and at the bottom the scroll terminates in a wooden baton. Of the two column inscription, the left column reads 吉客有幽人,遺世而獨立,飄飄乎欲仙,可望不可即, which could be translated as ‘there is a hermit who lives in seclusion; he seems as if floating into the sky and almost becomes a deity who can only be seen from a distance and can never be reached’. This poem is thought to be a personification work which uses the hermit to imply the dignified, graceful and elegant feature of the orchids in this painting. This artwork was made by 漱芝 ‘Shu Zhi’ (whose real name is賀祝堯 ‘He Zhu-Yao’, the same painter of 4667ii.)
