coffin

The lid of a mummy case or coffin for a female mummy. It is anthropoid in shape and is largely unpainted.
The face has been carved separately, as well as the section above the face. The eyes, eyebrows and lips have been delicately carved and look like they were once detailed with pigment which has mostly worn away. The face is reddish in tone as though this was also once painted. The end of the nose has broken away and there are cracks along the length of the face. Prominent ears have been carved to the sides of the face. The wig area has been detailed in a dark pigment but the rest of the sarcophagus appears to ream ain unpainted. There are several finger sized holes in the face and head which look like they have been plugged with putty. There are insect exit holes over the top of the head. A section of wood has come away at the top of the head and has been replaced with a modern piece. A section of wood of a similar shape was found with part b, so could be the missing piece.

The right foot also looks like it may have been replaced. There are two slots on the outside of the feet section. There are three pieces of wood inserted into the torso, presumably to plug holes.
