plaque (ritual & belief: representations)

Carved ivory plaque depicting the Tree of Jesse, showing the ancestors of Jesus. There is a large reclining male figure at the bottom, representing Jesse of Bethlehem, the father of King David. A tree grows from his chest. The tree has seven branches, some ending in buds, others in flowers, which support thirteen small crowned, seated figures. The central flower carries the Virgin and Child.
