Vase of porcelain with a rounded body, thin neck, and flared top with scalloped edge. It is lacquered in black and red, with the background divided into different areas with different background patterns. The lacquer extends part way down the inside of the mouth. There are two cartouches on the front and back, two on the neck, and two on the body. On the lower cartouches are designs of birds on tree branches. On one upper cartouche are irises; the other has bamboo. It is also decorated in gold maki-e. There are stripes around the top of the neck and close to the base. There are signatures on the base. The maker's name seems to be Shinsuke, the kiln a place in Kyushu, Arita, in Saga prefecture or Nagasaki. The trade mark on the base reads 'Hichozan Shinpo sei', and is the mark used by Tashiro Monzaemon. 345 mm high x 147 mm diameter at the top, which is widest part, about the same as the widest part of the body.
