carving

Carved and painted wooden side piece from a Sicilian cart. At each end is a wooden head, next to the section which slots onto the cart. The main part in the middle represents a scene: on the left the bricks of a wall and a gateway; to its right a woman in a shawl seated within a circular surround with scalloped edge, perhaps representing a coach as to the right of this are the forequarters of two horses, with further roofed brick buildings to the far right. In the foreground to the right of the scene are waves. The panel has been displayed at some time: two fittings for mounting are set in the reverse, which is otherwise plain. H.130, W.825, D. 33mm
