horn (containers)

Horn container for gun powder, possibly made of cow or yak horn, with leather fittings and strap. It was collected from nomads.

This horn container for gunpowder is made from two horns, spliced together. At either end is a leather stopper, a hoop at the centre allows the container to be suspended from a bandolier or chatelaine and a leather strap strengthens one of the horns where it has cracked. The gun power container would have been used in conjunction with match or flintlock musket; an essential part of a nomad's equipment.
