Earthenware dish from Horezu, Romania made by Victor Vicşoreanu. Shallow circular dish with short foot, decorated on the inside with stripes of black on cream, combed into patterns, with detailing in yellow, blue and light brown. Stamped circular impression on the undecorated underside reads 'VICTOR VICSOREARU HOREZU ROMANIA'.
This dish was a gift by Eufrosina Vicsoreanu, the wife of the most famous folk art potter in the village of Horezu. The piece represents exquisite technique and ornamentation. The image in the middle is a representation of a sunflower; the sides are peacock feathers in the rhombus-shaped fields, which represent part of a traditional shirt sleeve. Eufrosina told me that she thought about embroidery when this piece was made - therefore the lines of the round pattern are very fine and pronounced.
