mask (dance & live theatre)

Carved and painted wooden dance mask of Raden Panji Kuda Lalejan, with dark reddish brown face and lips apart revealing a neat row of teeth painted white. Narrow slits for the eyes with slender raised eyebrows painted black and an elegant pointed nose suggest this is a fairly refined character. The hair is carved and painted in curls above the forehead with orange spots at the centre of each curl and an eight-pointed star or flower at the centre. There is a leather strap on the reverse for the wearer to grip the mask with his teeth. It has signs of wear.
