Openwork basket on integral raised pedestal, also of basketwork. The base is formed of two rings of split bamboo bound together with narrow strips of vegetal material at regular intervals. Inserted between the two rings and held in place by two horizontal bands of bamboo strip through which they interweave are further strips of bamboo which emerge from the base at alternately angled diagonals, crossing one another as they rise and interwoven with two further widely spaced horizontal strips. They are secured at the top in a structure resembling that at the base. This circular structure supports a shallow basket within it. Into the upper rim of the outer structure, in addition to the diagonal strips which form the sides of the support as described, further strips have been inserted, which form the sides of a square based basket within the overall structure, its base about half way down. The sides of this inner basket are interwoven with the outer structure at the top, but then have separate horizontal strips woven in and out, quite closely at the sides but more widely spaced in the base.
