harmonium

Harmonium with lid, key and case. Bass male. 7-part bellows. 3½ octave coupler. The makers advised that the case is made of 'red mirinda' (?Meranti) and the interior of the instrument is constructed of kail (Pinus wallichiana) wood. The instrument has 9 stops and two sets of reeds.
The fourth stop from the left draws out an additional set of reeds. Stops 5 and 7 operate the tremulant, for background music in dramas. Stops 2, 4, 6 and 8 are used in classical music. The lever at the side of the instrument is the coupler

The instrument is played seated on the ground. The left hand operates the bellows. This harmonium was created to accompany the male voice. It is used for background music in dramas. It is also used in the shabad kirtan (scriptural compositions or hymns sung in the Gurdwara), and in schools, colleges, at morning prayers and in folk music.
