The Life Saver

Coloured poster with black border entitled "The Life Saver", of a Chinese child floating on a red cross while other children drown in the waves. Missionary propaganda produced by The Religious Tract Society of Hankow. Donor said that these were on the wall of the Mission where Ms Wilson worked. On the top of the poster is an inscription of a verse from the Acts in the Bible: 4:12除耶穌以外,別無拯救,因為在天下人間,沒有賜下別的名我們可以靠著得救 ‘Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Translation from King James Bible).’ The other verse on the left hand side is from the 1 Corinthians in the Bible: 1:18因為十字架的道理,在那滅亡的人為愚拙,在我們得救的人卻為神的大能 ‘For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God (Translation from King James Bible).’ The person at the bottom carries a bag with the Chinese character罪 ‘zui’, which means ‘sins’ (in the context of ‘seven deadly sins’).

Collected by the donor's aunt, Hilda Wilson, who was a missionary (China Inland Mission) in Szechwan from the 1930s until 1947.
