Flute-flageolet, duct flute head joint but otherwise configured as a flute. Held transversely across the body while playing. Stained boxwood with one silver-plated key and ivory mouthpiece, end cap and ferrules. Key is block mounted with square flat flap and leather pad. Block mount is full/round. Five joints. String lapped tenons. Head joint stamped: BAINBRIDGE/INVENTOR/NEW PATENT; Barrel/stock stamped: BAINBRIDGE/..WOOD/35 HOLBORN HILL/LONDON/PATENT; with a crown emblem above. Upper joint, lower joint and foot joint stamped: BAINBRIDGE/& WOOD

The flageolet is a duct flute that is classified according to the system of Hornbostel and Sachs as an 'open flute with internal duct, with fingerholes and key'. When the alternative piccolo headjoint is used, the instrument is classified as an 'open side-blown flute, with fingerholes and key'.
