basket (containers)

Woven cylindrical basket with lid. The outside of the basket is decorated with a patchwork of triangles of blue-green and yellow fabrics, each bordered by a double row of small white shells sewn on; four of the same shells are stitched into the centre of each diamond in a radial arrangement. This decoration extends two-thirds of the way up the sides of the basket, and is also on the sides and top of the lid, though the pattern on the lid is one of diamonds and the colours of the fabrics used are brighter. The lid has a small handle on each side, through which is threaded a handle or strap of blue material decorated with lines of shells; the handle is attached to the main body of the basket so the lid cannot be completely removed. There is a long fringe of shells hanging from the bottom of the basket with tassels of thread at the bottom of each string. There are strings of shells hanging from the lid of the basket, too. The inside of the basket is plain.
