salt box (box (food processing & storage))

Wooden salt box, with a lid attached to the sides with two nails acting as hinges. The back extends above the sides and has a small circular opening enabling the container to be hung on the wall.The sides are joined by nails. Each side has simple decorative elements of incised lines in the form of a quarter moon. The back is smooth with no ornamention. On the base is a pencil marking made by the maker: Solniczka [salt container] Ansyef.im OSTOJOW Kreis Kielce Polen 15zl.

Many of these salt containers were made for Cepelia which traded them in Poland and abroad. They were popular until the 1970s and 1980s and are still used in some households today where they were hung in the kitchen.
