badge of rank

Square rank insignia badge, buzi, of tapestry woven silk, and metal-wrapped thread textile. The badge consists of two halves of a pictorial panel stitched together along the centre and surrounded by a frame of linked swastikas. It would have been stitched to the front of a court surcoat. The panel has a broad band of diagonal pattern in three shades of blue at the bottom. Above this is an image on a cream background bordered at top and bottom by a band of stylised clouds. The image is of a bird, possibly a Paradise Flycatcher or a goose, perched on a rock with its wings spread, gazing at a sun disc. This is surrounded by smaller motifs of the Eight Buddhist Emblems, the Four Precious Things, flowers, magnolia or peony and bamboo, clouds, and two bats.
