hat (clothing: headwear)

Conical hat with wide brim, finely woven in narrow strips of lacquered maroon or natural brown vegetal material in a variety of patterns over similarly fine ribs. The crown has been covered with a circle of brown cloth. The circumference of the rim has a triple band of rattan bound to it in a criss cross pattern of yarn which also secures a band of cloth which lines the undrneath around the rim. The inside of the hat is lined with wide strips of palm leaf, repaired in the crown area with further patches of cloth. Two lengths of black tape are fixed to the underside of the hat to secure it under the wearer's chin but are unlikely to be original.
