floor felt; textile

Rectangular red floor felt with resist decoration, probably achieved with stencilled rice paste, showing the original cream colour. Small areas accentuated with yellow which has been applied. The main, upper, panel of the textile depicts a flying phoenix with a floral design either side. This panel is framed by a band of fret motif. The lower, smaller panel is a band of 5 linked motifs repeated horizontally, each consisting of a more or less rectangular design, framed on 3 sides and topped with a foliate motif.
