Tenor valve trombone in B flat with three Vienna valves.

This instrument was bought in 1972 from the instrument collector and scholar Philip Bate. It is difficult to determine the maker, as the bell has been replaced and the original inscription lost. However, Bate was almost certain that it is the work of the firm Van Engelen who were active in Lierre, Antwerp in the period 1813-1924. The instrument has three Vienna valves, but their piston mechanisms are of a distinctively Belgian design, known as the 'Système Belge'.
