bridle (camel furniture)

Camel bridle made of two parts, with a noseband made from copper, and a lower jaw clamping bracket or strap made from leather. A long plaited leather rein is attached.

This camel bridle consists of two parts ('akeskabbu' and 'amadel' in Tamahaq), and was collected from the Kel Ahaggar in Tamanrasset and bought for 60 dinar. 'Akeskabbu' is a cavesson, or noseband, made from copper, and 'amadel' is a lower jaw clamping bracket or strap (made from leather). Keenan refers to fig 50 in Johannes Nicolaisen's 'Ecology and culture of the pastoral Tuareg: with particular reference to the Tuareg of Ahaggar and Ayr' (Nicolaisen, 1963, p 70, fig 50).
