hangings

A pair of sleeve bands sewn together longitudinally to form a textile hanging. The several different scenes are symmetrical about the central join. These include two women in a building overlooking a pond with fish and lotuses, and two characters in a boat, each with a single oar. The satin embroidery is worked mainly in Peking knot, satin stitch and couched gold-coloured metal-wrapped thread on a pink satin background. The imagery is framed with applied commercial braiding and a floral embroidered border trimmed with black satin. The textile is lined with blue tabby woven satin.

Item received from the V&A alongside other Chinese textiles, which were bequeathed by Mrs. G. M. Spear of Eastbourne.
