container (containers); lamp (lighting devices)

Container and lid made from leather that has been converted into a table lamp. The upper part is decorated all over with geometric designs in brown pigment, and a hole has been made in the side for insertion of an electric cable. It was originally a bata box, made to store incense, make-up, creams or jewellery. Bata are made by female artisans (Tinaden), constructed from small pieces of soaked leather that are formed over a clay mould. The design is created by applying strips of wax before dying, then peeling them off to reveal the pattern.
