The following comments result from a research visit made by Alison Brown, Anita Herle, Alan Pard and Charlene Wolfe, to examine some of the Horniman’s Blackfoot material (5 March 2015) : Small cylinder case which has been heavily ochred, indicative of protective use of paint. The circular disk that would be expected to be seen at the end is missing. Instead it can be secured with the use of raw hide ties. There are no holes punched for the lid. It may be for something like the Brave Dog rattle, or for a knife as it seems to be some kind of a scabbard. AP has seen scabbards like this that could be used for guns, while on horseback, so that the barrel of the gun would come out the bottom. There are no tell-tale signs of use. Geometric design along the length.
