picnic hamper

Picnic basket made of wicker covered in black gum and lacquered. Three circular layers, with openwork decoration on the middle tray picked out in gold paint. Each layer consists of a circular tray, the bottom one having a long handle passing over the others and holding them in position. On each side of this handle near the top is a horizontal slit, through which a wooden bar may have slotted to keep the lid to the top layer in place. The top of the handle itself has a carrying handle made of metal on it. The bottom tray may have carried a pottery heating apparatus to keep the food in the other two trays hot.

Donated together with other Chinese specimens, collected by two Presbyterian medical missionaries, Drs. Lyal & Kiercross, in 1902.
