jar (containers); jar (food processing & storage)

Jar of ovoid form with rolled mouth rim and broad flat base. The body is brown stoneware covered with olive green glaze, base unglazed. The upper part of the exterior is decorated with impressed vertical striation, below which are three incised horizontal bands.

Jars of this type were made in the coastal cities in Guangdong and Fujian provinces in China. They were used as containers for commercial goods such as wines and pickles being exported to Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. These Chinese jars were highly valued in those countries even when empty, and were kept as family heirlooms.
