Flute in D, dark hardwood, silver mounts, ivory-bushed embouchure-hole with silver lip plate. Eight silver keys, the foot keys plug-type, the remainder round and cupped, mounted in turned blocks, the pivot-blocks metal-lined. Metal lined head joint and tuning slide, movable cork-faced hardwood stopper. Sounding length (embouchure to foot) is 57.5 cm. Elaborately chased silver ferrules. Upper (left hand) joint recessed for left forefinger, surface of lower (right hand) joint flatted at the finger holes and surfaced with lizard skin for right thumb. Springs of B flat and cross F natural keys defective. The head joint has been shortened. The top tenon of the upper middle joint has been shortened. The metal tip to the middle tenon is a repair. Head is cracked from end to end. Some denting of the lip-plate indicates defects in the underlying wood. Stamped: T. Prowse Hanway Street, London, C. Nicholson's Improved.
