Landmark Late: Part of Being Human Festival

Join us for a night of interactive experiences, installations and participatory performances exploring how humans mark the land and how the land marks us.

On the first Thursday of each month the Horniman will be open to visitors until 9pm.

Explore the collections after hours, enjoy the galleries, see our current displays and grab a drink with friends.

Our Horniman Museum Late in November gives you the opportunity to see Adolescent Wonderland, the Natural History Pop-up and explore the World and Music Galleries.

Landmarks Late

From immersive mixed reality performances exploring human evolution, to a Caribbean crafting workshop responding to research on stored objects from the Horniman’s collection, a series of interactive activities led by researchers at Goldsmiths, University of London and a performance from community partner, IRIE! dance theatre, will explore themes of the Anthropocene, deep time, climate crisis, and indigenous ways of knowing.

This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 7-16 November 2024. Being Human is led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.

Sonic Postcards

Draw your response to the Landmarks Late on a postcard. Once scanned and augmented by Marcus Leadley and the Electronic Music Studios team it will add to an evolving soundscape based on their field recordings made at the museum.

Groundation: Dancing from the Archives

Take part in a drumming workshop followed by a performance from IRIE! dance theatre, the UK’s leading company working in the field of African and Caribbean dance fusion. You’ll see an extract from Groundation, a reflection on 38 years of creative and performance history that explores the roots of the company.

Three Conversations on Landmarks

BBC New Generation Thinker, Dr Becca Voelcker, leads three public conversations with key people involved in helping to shape the Horniman Museum and Garden’s transformational Nature and Love project, which includes the redisplay of the museum’s famous Natural History gallery.

Join an interactive walking tour of the museum lead by Dr Padraig Kirwan. You’ll see the Horniman’s North American collection and explore the connections between the Choctaw Nation and the Irish people.
