Sensory Session: A Musical Adventure

Go on a multi-sensory, musical adventure and help a curator from the Museum to travel the world looking for instruments for the Horniman.

Use your imagination to join in with an interactive story. Travelling to Nigeria, singing a Yoruba song of welcome, and then onto Brazil in search of musical instruments to wrap up and bring back to the Museum. Explore and play the instruments you choose along the way!

This session will be tailored for your pupils; we’d be grateful if you could share some information about your pupils’ needs when you book the session.

Please visit our SEN/D Groups page for more information about the facilities availble at the Museum (including changing tables and onsite parking for minibuses), a link to our visual story, and our sensory backpacks.

Maximum group size: 12 pupils

In this session, your pupils’ experience will include:

-Sitting on the carpet, if appropriate (cushions available)
-Listening to and engaging with a sensory story
-Experiencing a range of sounds and objects they may not have encountered before
-Touching and playing real museum objects
-Taking turns and sharing instruments with classmates
-Making independent and supported choices

To complement your session please make sure you visit the Music Gallery and the Sound Garden in the Gardens.

To prepare your pupils for their visit please look at our Social Story for a preview of the Museum and to meet some of our Learning staff.

Please note that our Natural History Gallery is now closed as part of a major 2 year redevelopment, Nature + Love. The rest of our Galleries, displays and Gardens will be open as usual, with plenty across the site to support your topic (including our Music and World Galleries). Our schools workshops are unaffected.

We will be opening a new, free temporary exhibition about the natural world, animals and their habitats, in September 2024.
