The Walrus Tea Party was great!

Thanks to everyone who took part in our first Great Walrus Tea Party.

It was lovely to see so many people being creative and having online tea parties with colleagues and friends, socially distanced picnics and family tea parties at home.

Together you baked more than 40 different walrus-inspired and ocean-themed cakes and biscuits – a splendid virtual banquet which really tickled our taste buds.

The judges had a hard task deciding our competition winners but here they are:

  • In the biscuit category, these cute and stylish gingerbread walruses win David Vallade a £50 voucher to spend in the Horniman gift shop.
  • And in cake corner, seven-year-old Lyra Holmes’s characterful recreation of the walrus atop a detailed marzipan iceberg wins her a family or gift Membership.

Both prizes are valid for one year from 30 July, when we will reopen our doors to visitors for first time since the Coronavirus lockdown.

The Great Walrus Tea Party 2020 may not have been quite as originally planned, due to the lockdown, but your support has raised over £1,000 in much-needed online donations.

Thank you for all your toothsome cakes and flipp(er)ing good fundraising for the Great Walrus Tea Party. We’ve loved seeing your bakes, and the money you’ve raised will help the Horniman Museum and Gardens to inspire future generations of London’s families and school children with lifelong curiosity.
