Gardens Redevelopment Project

As part of the £2.3 million project, many of the Horniman’s outdoor spaces were improved or redesigned completely. The 1912 bandstand was restored and the Gardens Pavilion built, establishing an additional venue for school visits, conferences, and public performances.

The 16-month-long project ensured greater harmony between the Museum and its Gardens. Plants were introduced to complement the collections, including varieties for producing dyes and medicines. A Sound Garden was built which, like the Music Gallery, encourages visitors to think about instruments and tone.

Since the project visitors can also engage with the living environment through nature trails and the Animal Walk.

The project, executed by Land Use Consultants, was made possible with £907,000 in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund, through the Parks for People scheme.
