Egypt’s Dispersed Heritage

Egypt’s Dispersed Heritage’s new AHRC-funded initiative ‘Mobilising Collections for Institutional Change’ and the Horniman are collaborating with Egyptian artists, schools, and community initiatives to present a contemporary story on Egypt as a living country.

This will be presented through the voices and experiences of its children, youth, and adults today. It is supported by Alice Stevenson, PI of the ‘Mobilising Collections for Institutional Change’ research programme.

This collaboration will be an important opportunity to purchase well-researched contemporary Egyptian objects for the Horniman’s Handling Collection, in partnership with Egyptian artists and craft makers.

These objects will be woven into school workshops exploring broader cross-cultural topics, such as ‘kites’, ‘textiles’, and ‘music’, to ensure that contemporary Egyptian culture is represented beyond ancient history sessions.

The starting point of this project has been reviewing the Horniman’s Ancient Egyptian schools workshop and accompanying resources. In the current workshop, children handle Ancient Egyptian grave goods, held in the Horniman’s Handling Collection. They learn how to examine artefacts for clues about the lives and beliefs of the people who once owned them.

The workshop’s focus is around preparation of the dead and representations of Ancient Egyptian deities and gods. The presence of Egyptian people is limited to mummified human remains and the realities of lived Egyptian heritage, and the presence of Egyptian people in the world today is only touched upon.

The Horniman’s Ancient Egyptian schools workshop is representative of the way Ancient Egypt is taught across many UK schools. The teaching of Ancient Egypt is often mystified and most UK school children do not develop an association between Ancient Egypt and Egypt today. From this project, we hope to develop a more people-centred teaching of Ancient Egypt.

The Horniman and Egypt’s Dispersed Heritage have formed a partnership between Holbeach Primary School in Lewisham and Sadiki Initiative, a community school in Cairo. Through this partnership, school children are helping us to rethink the perspectives that are used to teach about ancient Egypt in our Museum.

In November 2022, we began a series of workshops pairing Holbeach Primary School and Sadiki Initiative. In these workshops school children in Egypt and the UK are reflecting upon and sharing perceptions on what it means to be living in Egypt in the past and present.

آثارنا المتغربة في متحف هورنيمان

تعمل هبة عبد الجواد، الباحثة المشاركة في معهد علوم الآثار في كلية لندن الجامعية، مع فريق هورنيمان التعليمي في مشروع تعاوني يبحث في الطريقة اللي بـيتم بها تدريس مصر القديمة في المدارس البريطانية والمصرية. هنا تقدم هبة المشروع واللي بـيهدف إلى تحقيقه.

تتعاون المبادرة الجديدة لآثارنا المتغربة “استخدام المجموعات المتحفية للتغيير المؤسسي” مع القسم التعليمي لمتحف هورنيمان مع فنانين مصريين ومدارس ومبادرات مجتمعية لتقديم قصة معاصرة عن مصر كبلد حي. هيتم تقديم ده من خلال أصوات وخبرات أطفال وشباب وأهل مصر النهاردة. وهي مدعومة من أليس ستيفنسون، الباحث الرئيسي في البرنامج البحثي.

هيكون التعاون فرصة مهمة لانضمام قطع مصرية معاصرة مدروسة بعناية لمجموعة هورنيمان للأنشطة التعليمية، بالشراكة مع فنانين مصريين وصناع حرف. هيتم نسج القطع المعاصرة في ورش عمل مدرسية لتناول موضوعات متعددة الثقافات، زي “الطائرات الورقية” و “المنسوجات” و “الموسيقى”، لضمان تمثيل الثقافة المصرية المعاصرة بجانب مصر القديمة.

كانت نقطة البداية للمشروع هي مراجعة ورش عمل متحف هورنيمان للمدارس عن مصر القديمة والأنشطة المختلفة. لاحظنا في برنامج ورش العمل الحالي، إن الأطفال بتتعامل فقط مع الأدوات الجنائزية المصرية القديمة، المحفوظة في مجموعة هورنيمان للأنشطة التعليمية. بـيتعلموا فحص القطع الأثرية للبحث عن أدلة حول حياة ومعتقدات اصحابها اللي كانوا بـيمتلكوها زمان. ورشة العمل بـتركز على إعداد الموتى وتمثيل الآلهة والآلهة المصرية القديمة. الملاحظة الرئيسية هي أن وجود المصريين في هذه الورش يقتصر على البقايا الآدمية المحنطة. للأسف مابيتمش التطرق لواقع المصري المعاصر لمصر  وحياة المصريين النهاردة.

تمثل ورش القسم التعليمي لهورنيمان الطريقة اللي بـيتم بها تدريس مصر القديمة في العديد من مدارس المملكة المتحدة. غالبًا ما بـيكون التدريس عن مصر القديمة محير، ومش بـيشجعش أطفال المدارس في المملكة المتحدة أنهم يربطوا بين مصر القديمة ومصر النهاردة. من خلال التعاون ما بين آثارنا المتغربة وهورنيمان، نأمل إن يكون في تقديم لطرق تدريس مصر القديمة  أكثر تركيزًا على الناس والمصريين المعاصرين.

شكل القسم التعليمي لهورنيمان وآثارنا المتغربة شراكة بين مدرسة هولبيتش الابتدائية في لويشام ومبادرة صديقي في الظاهر والمدرسة المصرية اليابانية في العبور. من خلال مشاركة أطفال المدارس في القاهرة ولندن هتم إعادة التفكير في وجهات النظر المستخدمة لتدريس مصر القديمة في متحف هورنيمان.

بدأنا في نوفمبر 2022 سلسلة من ورش العمل تجمع بين مدرسة هولبيتش الابتدائية في لويشام ومبادرة صديقي في الظاهر والمدرسة المصرية اليابانية في العبور خلالها بـيفكر أطفال المدارس في مصر والمملكة المتحدة ويشاركونا رأيهم في طبيعة حياة المصريين  في مصر في الماضي والحاضر ومعناها بالنسبة لهم..
