Knob-handled terracotta patera, fruit bowl, from Puglia, Italy. The clay colour is a natural pinkish red. The patera consists of a a wide, shallow bowl on a raised conical foot, with an emphasis at the edge of bowl with a moulded single step rim. There are two knobs towards the two vertical, triangular cross-sectioned handles, also with central knobs. It is decorated in red with a head of a woman facing a mirror, with dull black paint detailing for the hair and headdress, and white paint detail on the hair, headdress and drop earring. There is also a white laurel pattern around the edge of the tondo, on a black band. Around the tondo is a reserved wave pattern. It has black handles and parts of the rim, with a black band on the heavy, unpainted foot, and a black body.
