Greek askos, lamp, from Campania, Southern Italy. It is a closed vessel, wheel-made from pinkish clay. The body is covered in black/brown/greenish dull paint, except the underside of the foot. The foot is low, with external decoration of three horizontal flutes. The foot supports a body with vertical flutes around the circumference. Set vertically in this band-is a single thick ribbon ring handle, and a high-stemmed, trumpet-like, widely flaring mouth. The lower body has two turned bands. There is a tondo on top of vessel with mould-made decoration of the Head of Medusa, with flowing hair locks and round cheeks.
