skyphos

Drinking cup or skyphos, Corinthian, in early Corinthian animal style. It is made of thin, pale Corinthian clay. The exterior is decorated with pinky white slip. There are two horizontal handles below the mouth on this smooth-profiled open vessel, and it has a low ring foot. Originally, the interior was decorated with black matt paint which has since worn away. The exterior decoration includes rays around the base, and on the rim of the mouth are tongues within bands in dark brown paint. There is an animal panel in between the base and the rim, which consists of two energetic, long-necked opposed lions and a duck, painted in black with added red paint. There is infill decoration between the animals of blob rosettes. There is a lot of incision detail, especially on the lions.
