Painting of Yama king and scenes of hell. Hanging scroll, ink and colour on paper. This painting depicts the King Yan Luo (Yan Luo Huang), one of the Ten Kings of Hell who is responsible for judgement in the Fifth Court of Hell. Yan Luo Huang is sitting in front of a desk with two female attendants at the back, flanked by two assisting judges and two soldiers one with a horse head and one with a cow's head. In front of the desk are two demon guards. Depicted below are judgement scenes which show three large crystal balls on pedestals. Each has a group of figures standing in front of it. (From left to right, top to bottom): 1. A man, a demon and another man dressed like an official are looking at the crystal ball, which shows two people having a conversation. 2. An old couple are looking at the crystal ball, which shows them worshipping the Buddha. 3. Two demon guards are holding two kneeling men, while a buffalo is kneeling next to them. They see themselves sitting on the back of the buffalo in the crystal ball. 4. A demon guard is torturing a man in the Chamber of Scales, where the man's back is pierced with a hook and he is hung upside down. He is being punished for cheating on the quality of goods or oppressing the innocent. 5. An underworld official is burning two men in the Chamber of Flames. They are being punished for stealing or cheating. 6. Another man is being hung upside down by having a hook pierced into his body in the Chamber of Scales.
