Saddle, kura, carved from wood. The outside of the back and front panels are plain wood decorated with peonies in silver and gold maki-e technique (sprinkled gold and silver powder) used with lacquer, with the wood protected by a stencil. The top of the seat of the saddle, which is formed of two pieces with a gap between, is in makie technique sprinkled with gold on black lacquer (Mura-nashiji). The underside of the back and front pieces (the larger piece is the back) are decorated in makie mura-nashiji also. Some parts are covered in lacquered linen to protect the wood. Inscription indicates August 1755. Horeki 5 August. Also a carved saddle-maker's (carver's) symbol (kao), not known by Dr Doi. 283h x 390w x 407l.
