print (ritual & belief: representations); printing block

Wood block with print from the block on paper, mounted on card. The print is of the protective Vajra Kilaya mantra, set in a flaming wheel. At the centre of the print is a vajra, surrounding which is the mantra, “Om Vajra Kilaya, Sarva Biga na pa Hugn Phat”. This mantra protects from 8 classes of Lha-sin spirits. Each lobe of the form that encloses the mantra is marked with the syllable ‘Hun’ and is separated from its neighbours by a vajra sceptre.

Along the inner ring runs the mantra, “Om Vajra Kila Kilaya Svaha Biga na pa Hugn Phat”, the same as that which is printed in the centre. Then follows a text in Tibetan which translates to, “Protect thoroughly the bearer of this from harm by divine beings and by the Nagas … bTsan, gNyan and other spirits”.

The outer ring also contains texts in Tibetan beseeching protection from a variety of harmful spirits.

The rim of the protective mantra wheel is flaming all around, perhaps to indicate purification and to ward off potentially harmful spirits.
