Lacquered wooden seated figure of Dai-Nichi-Nyorai, a manifestation of the Buddha [Mahavairocana] made of more than one piece of wood and with crystal eyes. Eyelids lowered; raised dot in forehead. Holding index finger of left hand vertically clasped inside fingers of right hand, a mudra typical of this figure. Headdress consists of flat circular element with vertical hexagonal part above. remains of gilding evident on arms and body. Garment covering left shoulder and left hand side of upper body and in many folds all of the lower part of the body, only the toes of the two feet flat in the lotus position. Inscription in Japanese characters on base gives date 1624 and refers to Ryuzouin Temple close to the phrase 'ordered by Kohkai', also 'Wada Yoshimichi', the latter possibly the maker. 395h x 282w x 230d.
