noh mask (dance & live theatre)

Carved wooden Okina mask depicting old man in light coloured wood. Could be used for opening a Noh performance but more probably at rituals such as welcoming in New Year etc. Articulated jaw. Black band across top of head indicating headgear. Deeply furrowed brow and cheeks. Narrow curved apertures for eyes, and apertures for nostrils. Eyebrows indicated with cotton fibre; beard by black strands of hair inserted in holes in the chin, and moustache by thin painted vertical lines. Two teeth indicated (largely by paint) in upper jaw. GHH 3919 is written on the inside in red.
